Is there space travel at TU Darmstadt? The question is obvious, given that Darmstadt is known as ‘Europe's gateway to space’ as the location of the European Space Operations Centre (ESA/ESOC) or the satellite operator EUMETSAT. With the colloquium ‘Space @ TU Darmstadt’, the TU has launched an event with a showcase character: current and fundamental topics from space travel are addressed in three to five evening events per semester.

Here’s what’s coming up:
On 13.08.2026, Nuno Carvalho PhD, (ESA/ESOC, Telespazio) will introduce OPS-SAT-1, ESA’s pioneering CubeSat mission that opened a spacecraft platform to the global community for experimentation. During his talk, he will provide insights into the challenges and design decisions behind safely enabling in-orbit experimentation by professionals, researchers, and students, highlighting the mission’s operations, scheduling, ground systems, and lessons learned from thousands of experiments conducted throughout the mission lifetime.
On 17.09.2026, Dr.-Ing. Michael Börner (DLR Institute of Space Propulsion / TU Darmstadt) takes us from rocket propulsion to space transportation, exploring the technologies that enable today’s launch systems and shape the future of access to space. In his talk, he will provide an overview of current international developments and trends in space propulsion, discuss the challenges of reliable and efficient transportation systems, and share insights from research at DLR and TU Darmstadt towards advancing Europe’s independent access to space.
