The Hessian space community gathered at the Eventcenter Fredenhagen in Offenbach on June 1, 2023 for the full-day event “Hessen in Space”, which already took place for the second time. Initiated by the Space Coordinator of the Hessian State Government, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Johann-Dietrich Wörner, the event provided an ideal platform for information exchange and networking among approximately 200 participants from research, industry, and education. TU Darmstadt was prominently present, offering insights into its expanding range of activities under the banner of “Space@TU Darmstadt”.

The booth of TU Darmstadt garnered significant attention at the event, with visitors showing great interest in the university's space-related endeavors. Among the visitors was also a delegation led by Hessian Minister President Boris Rhein, Hessian space coordinator Jan Wörner, and astronaut Thomas Reiter, who also learned about the space-related initiatives at the university during their tour. “In Darmstadt, we have placed a strong emphasis on sustainability in and through space activities. The collaboration with ESA/ESOC in Darmstadt allows us to achieve unique synergies in research and education,” emphasized Prof. Dr.-Ing. Reinhold Bertrand, Cooperative Professor for Space Systems at TU Darmstadt.

Adding to the space highlights of the event, the student association “Darmstadt Space Technology e.V.” showcased their activities in the field of high-altitude research rockets and the ongoing development of the “TU Darmstadt ReseArch Cubesat for Education” (TRACE), a double unit cubesat being funded and built with support from DLR.

“Over the past 5 years, space-related topics have become a real magnet for young talents at TU Darmstadt. Student enrollments, particularly in the new master's program 'Aerospace Engineering,' are steadily increasing, contrary to the general trend in mechanical engineering. Additionally, two new research groups focusing on 'Space Traffic Management' and 'Space Systems Engineering' have been established,” Bertrand further stated. It is gratifying to see that TU Darmstadt has become an integral part of the space ecosystem in Hessen.
